Honouring excellence in Bharatanatyam and the classical arts

Celebrating Excellence

Tapas Cultural Foundation recognises outstanding contributions to Bharatanatyam through two prestigious award programmes — the Vidhya Tapasvi Award and the Tapas Aashirwada Award — each serving a distinct purpose within the broader mission of honouring excellence in the classical arts.

Vidhya Tapasvi Award

The Vidhya Tapasvi Award is Tapas Cultural Foundation's most distinguished honour — presented to artists, gurus, and scholars who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit and propagation of Bharatanatyam. The award recognises not just technical mastery, but the deeper qualities of dedication, scholarship, and service to the art form.

Established by Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin, the award reflects the values at the heart of Tapas Cultural Foundation — that true excellence in Bharatanatyam is inseparable from character, commitment, and a spirit of selfless service.

Tapas Aashirwada Award

Blessing and recognising emerging artists of exceptional promise

The Tapas Aashirwada Award — "aashirwada" meaning blessings — is given to emerging artists who show exceptional talent, commitment, and promise in their journey with Bharatanatyam. While the Vidhya Tapasvi recognises a lifetime of achievement, the Aashirwada celebrates potential and encourages the next generation.

The award is intended not just as a recognition, but as an encouragement — a formal blessing from the senior artistic community upon the career of a young artist, affirming their path and inspiring continued dedication.

Selection Criteria

  • Emerging artist — typically under 35 years of age
  • Demonstrated excellence and rapid growth in Bharatanatyam
  • Clear artistic vision and commitment to the classical tradition
  • Active performer and/or contributor to the art community
