Where authentic Bharatanatyam training transforms students into artists
Tapas Academy is the educational arm of Tapas Cultural Foundation — a place where the ancient art of Bharatanatyam is taught with rigour, reverence, and joy. Under the direct guidance of Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin, the Academy offers structured training for students at all levels, from young beginners to advanced performers.
Our core philosophy is rooted in the Guru Parampara tradition — the unbroken lineage of master-to-student transmission that has sustained Bharatanatyam across centuries. We believe that great dancing emerges from deep understanding: of rhythm, of expression, of the stories and philosophies that give Bharatanatyam its extraordinary depth.
We operate from three locations in Chennai — Valasaravakkam, Madipakkam, and Porur — making world-class Bharatanatyam education accessible across the city.
A thoughtful approach to Bharatanatyam training — balancing tradition and innovation
Every aspect of training begins with the classical foundations — the margam, the adavus, the abhinaya vocabulary handed down through the Guru Parampara. We never compromise on the authenticity of the tradition.
We employ contemporary pedagogical methods — structured curricula, clear milestones, constructive feedback — to make the learning journey more effective, enjoyable, and measurable for every student.
Dance training at Tapas develops far more than technique. Students develop discipline, confidence, cultural literacy, emotional intelligence, and a lifelong relationship with classical Indian arts.
Learning happens in community. Our students grow together, support each other's performances, participate in festivals, and form bonds that last a lifetime — creating a true Tapas family.
True mastery of Bharatanatyam requires understanding of Carnatic music, Tamil and Sanskrit texts, and the philosophical traditions that gave the art form its meaning and vocabulary.
Regular performance opportunities — from in-house presentations to festival stages — build stage confidence and give students real-world experience that classroom training alone cannot provide.
Structured training pathways for every stage of the Bharatanatyam journey

The living legacy of our students — achievements, alumni, and testimonials
Several Tapas students have received scholarships from the Ministry of Culture, Sangeet Natak Akademi, and other national bodies for their outstanding promise in Bharatanatyam.
Our students regularly win recognition at major dance festivals including Margazhi season performances, youth competitions, and inter-school classical dance competitions.
Dozens of students have completed their Arangetram (debut solo performance) under Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin's guidance, receiving critical acclaim from audiences and experts.
Several alumni are now performing artists in their own right — presenting solo and ensemble productions at prestigious venues across India and internationally.
A number of our alumni have become teachers themselves, establishing their own dance schools and continuing the Tapas tradition of excellence in new communities.
Tapas alumni carry the art of Bharatanatyam to cities worldwide — from the UK and USA to Singapore and the UAE — representing India's classical heritage on global stages.
Tapas Academy completely transformed my relationship with Bharatanatyam. What I received here wasn't just technique — it was a lifelong love for this art and the confidence to carry it forward.
As a parent, seeing my daughter bloom — not just as a dancer but as a thoughtful, disciplined young woman — has been the greatest gift. Smt. Mahalakshmi Ashwin is a remarkable guru.
The Gurukulam workshop was one of the most intense and fulfilling experiences of my dance life. The depth of learning in just a few days was extraordinary — I came away transformed.
From abroad, I was nervous about learning online. But the quality of instruction, the care taken to correct and guide me, and the sense of being part of the Tapas family made it truly special.
